ADVANCED MICROECONOMICS II

This course aims to provide theoretical tools for postgraduate and Ph.D. students who have learned the Advanced Microeconomics I. This course provides the basic microeconomic tools to be used in the analysis of problems of resource allocation by economists working in research, in businees or in various organisations. The first part of the course will be devoted to an introduction to game theory (basic concepts of dominant, undominated, rationalizable strategies, Nash, Bayesian Nash and subgame perfect Nash equilibrium) with some applications. The second part will be devoted to topics in information economics.

This course includes a wealth of trade theories and empirical evidence, such as the Ricardian and Heckscher-Ohlin models, extensions to many goods and factors, and the role of tariffs, quotas, and other trade policies. He examines imperfect competition, offshoring, political economy, multinationals, endogenous growth, the gravity equation, and the organization of the firm in international trade.

A key objective of this course is to provide students with the necessary tools so that they can analyze currently discussed issues in international economics and formulate and evaluate potential policies for the institutions and governments they may work for in the future.

The contribution of these institutions to economic growth will also be closely examined.

INTRODUCTION TO MATH ECONOMICS (BASIC) I

The course is intended for students without sufficient SACE Stage 2 Maths who wish to obtain knowledge of mathematical techniques suitable for economic analysis. It assumes very little prerequisite knowledge. The approach is informal and aims to show students how to do and apply the mathematics they require for a successful study of economics. Economic applications are considered although this course aims to teach the mathematics not the economics. Topics covered include basic algebra, simple finance, calculus and matrix algebra.

The course introduces students to the basic concepts of international business. Topics include internationalization theories; the impact of technology on multinational corporations; understanding documentation used in the international business arena; financing multinational operations; and international governance issues. There will be a focus on the appropriate theory and the course will aim to provide opportunities for the practical implementation of the main concepts covered.
